I was an impassioned decorative arts graduate student and Amy Spindler was the formidable, brilliant fashion editor for the NYT Magazine. Because of her reverence for Bonnie, I was swept into her orbit for an all-too-short, magical span of time, cut short by her death from a brain tumor at the age of forty. Her intellectual independence echoed Bonnie’s own and inspired mine. She wrote on BC’s career—her description of her clothes as “sophisticated tools for freedom and fun” is unmatched—soon asking me to tell my own story of the singular friendship that Bonnie and I shared—a classic New York story if ever there was one. She pitched it to   @nytimesfashion   telling me to charge more per word than was offered, lined up Brigitte Lacombe to photograph the piece, and landed 8 pages in the magazine for me to tell my tale. She took me to The Palm for dinner. We walked around Manhattan, talking without pause, her long trousers dragging on the ground just enough for me to think oh, so chic. She set me up on a few blind dates with her extended family and friends. I gave her some furniture from Bonnie’s collection. I am forever grateful for her interest, her honesty, her friendship, and these memories.   #bonniecashin     #amyspindler     #thenewyorktimes     #fashioneditor     #iconicwomen     #intellect     #independence     #cultofcashin     #theliveswelived     #thearchive   *edited to reflect my married surname

This was a turning point in the world of fashion. When Bonnie entered the fashion industry, she was told to specialize “in hats, or dressy things.” She recounted that she could not tolerate a design life that “would only be part of me.” When she announced plans to open her own design firm, designing entire wardrobes and a range of accessories in partnership with diverse manufacturers, the consensus in the fashion press was that this was unlikely to succeed. Instead, Bonnie paved the way for designers today. Her steadfast refusal to compromise, disinterest in accepted practices, and insistence on complete creative control allowed her to triumphantly dress her century in her own fashion. She was never an employee, never had investors, never licensed, owned every sketch, design, and her name.   @suzymenkesvogue  ’s writing about her business practices (following the opening of my   @museumatfit   exhibition “Bonnie Cashin: Practical Dreamer”) speaks to the significance of what she represented then, and the meaning and legacy of her choices, now.   #bonniecashin     #independence     #creativefreedom     #womaninbusiness     #womanoffashion     #womenshistory     #maverick     #visionary     #iconic     #courageofyourconvictions     #inherownfashion     #cultofcashin     #thearchive

Coach 1941 vs History. The real origin of this company is not centered on six anonymous leather craftsmen in a Soho loft in 1941. It is a fascinating, collaborative, female triumph that dates to two decades later. As   @bof   highlights the importance of transparency, it provides a platform to celebrate 1961, the year that Coach was established and the tale of rebellion and vision that led to its founding by three individuals: Miles Cahn, Lillian Cahn, and Bonnie Cashin. All had a history with fine leather craftsmanship, all set out to revolutionize the industry using these resources (while the Cahns’ experience traces back to work within Gail Leather, a wholesale manufacturing firm for men’s accessories that they purchased in 1961, Bonnie’s traces back to dressmaking with her mother in the 1920s and a mid-century partnership with a manufacturer whose family supplied saddles for the Czar). As they wrote in press releases and their own catalogue in 1963, this new company, with the name of Coach, “was created by us in order to establish an indentity of our own.” As Bonnie wrote, “accepted practices are not sacred,” and they all had “stars in their eyes.” It was Lillian who struck on the idea of making women’s accessories, and insisted only Bonnie could be the designer. Miles scoffed at the idea, but Lillian and Bonnie persisted, and these two women succeeded, against all odds and advice, in launching one of the most recognized brands in the world, one which still manufactures product according to original designs, and still uses Bonnie’s signature turn lock in every collection today. As Bonnie wrote, “the origins of what we wear, of what we use, have always been fascinating to me.”   #factcheck     #radicaltransparency     #bonniecashin     #fashionhistory     #womenshistory     #maverick     #visionary     #cultofcashin     #thearchive     #hiddenhistory     #historylesson

Thank you,   @timblanks   and   @bof  , for noting the origin of Coach’s “Legacy,” stripe as Bonnie’s signature lining. It is in contrast to a a pattern evident on Coach’s social media of not acknowledging Cashin’s work and her hallmarks by name, instead branding and referring to her iconic design signatures as “archival” and “legacy” elements. It is a curious stance, to avoid homage and make something so identifiable seem more generic. Cashin so adored this textile that she used it in garments and accessories for multiple manufacturers for over a decade.   #bonniecashin     #timblanks     #businessoffashion     #credit     #designsignature     #hallmark     #origins     #classiccashin     #fashionhistory     #womenshistory     #cultofcashin     #thearchive

Bonnie Cashin via Marc Jacobs FW2020, as reviewed by   @jeffreyfelner2  : “for those who need to wake up after this endless cavalcade of referenced, borrowed and generic collection of clothes…. they were nothing short of exercises and reduxes of what ateliers had already created decades ago for the greats. Let’s speak of the “borrowing/ referencing/ copying” aspects… I saw the Bonnie Cashin paper bag hat for starters, then came unendingly memories of the Rooskie iteration of Balenciaga, YSL, Valentino, Thom Browne, maybe even Jane Fonda dragging her shawl onto the stage at the Academy Awards and the list just goes on . . . I am interested in clothes and let me say that this was nothing more than Marc being Marc and being lauded for whatever it is he does.” Jeffrey, your frank and informed critiques echo Bonnie’s own.   #bonniecashin     #jeffreyfelner     #fashionbytherules     #businessoffashion     #fashionhistory     #context     #origins     #cultofcashin     #thearchive
